In a world that’s pushing AI and voice forward marketing and social media on the brink of another change, is email still a thing?
We would argue that now, more than ever, email is a huge game changer… if you do it right.
But what is right?
You’ve heard it,
“People don’t read.”
“I don’t want to be spammy.”
“I don’t know where to start.”
That’s what we’re going to discuss in this blog and if you’re already sold and want the templates so you know exactly what to do and what to write,
SO, now that that’s outta the way.
Let’s talk about the number one question I get as an email copywriter for small businesses.
To which I will remind you of something Michell, the founder of She The Mighty told me,
“If you’re annoying, one email is one too many.”
The trick is don’t be annoying.
Here are my tricks to not be annoying in email:
Get to the point quickly. None of this,
“Hi friends! It’s been such a great week here in the shop, we had a really great day and I just wanted to share with you….”
I’ll stop before you fall asleep or worse, scroll on.
Here’s what’s wrong with all of that.
FriendS…. FRIENDS. This is MY inbox. This is a one on one conversation, it’s private. Heck, I might be reading your email without pants on. I don’t want you breaking the illusion that I gave you my email and that this is a private conversation.
Where is the point? What did you want to share and why do I care about having a really great day?
You know what you would say to one of your best friends?
“HEY! [Fname] I jussssssst got these [insert your product here] and you’re going to LOVE them. They’re [benefits] but I only got one in soooooo let me know if you want them because otherwise I’ll put them on the floor.
Way more interesting read eh?
Because in a world of AI let’s let your freak flag fly a bit higher. Spell the words wrong, use the slang and have fun with it!
Remember that these people joined a SMALL business email list, not some corporate giant who wants a way to share about sales.
Ok so let’s get into the next one,
Well, that’s not exactly true is it?
The next ACOTAR books sold out and they aren’t even released yet.
People read what they’re interested in.
People watched The Bear, a show about cooking.
People listen to podcasts about business.
Whatever your medium you just have to be interesting.
Who’s to say you can’t write about your skin care brand like it’s the next Gossip Girl?
“So [Fname], I was at [insert trade show] last week and I have to tell you some tea. There was a makeup brand next to me and they were just SO mean to their customers and it got me thinking some really not nice things. Like, is that still a marketing tactic that works??”
Or
“I just got off the phone with one of my suppliers and she was telling me that they’re actually closing because of all the uncertainty and not being able to get a manufacturer to take on such a small batch production! It’s really sad because I really love this brand, they’re so good for [call out ideal customer] but that means that this order is my last ever order! Let me know if you want me to put anything aside for you.”
See? Not boring. Unless you don’t like stories, in which case - I have so many questions.
And the last thing,
Well, did you know where to start with your business?
Did you learn how to drive a car?
You can learn, this is how.
What would you want from someone you gave your email to?
1. A “Hey! I got your email and you’re on the list” email
2. Maybe a bit about the brand?
Think about what you would want, download the freebie and join STM for the email bootcamp. Not only is it instruction but it’s also weekly LIVE feedback so you can start knowing what’s working and how to set it up.
And I mean, there’s always Claude but… no offense, do you think Claude could write this blog the way that I did?
